BA FINE ART MIXED MEDIA GRADUATE DEGREE SHOWS
UNIVERSITY OF WESTMINSTER 2023, 2024, 2025
Between 2023 and 2025, as part of my role as a Specialist Technician at the University of Westminster, I was a member of the technical team responsible for building and delivering the graduating students’ Fine Art Mixed Media BA Honours Degree Show, held in Ambika P3 – a 14,000 square ft exhibition space in central London. This show was the culmination of the four year long Fine Art Mixed Media Degree, making it one of the most significant events in the academic and creative calendar.

The technical team managed all aspects of the exhibition build, beginning with sourcing materials and constructing walls, partitions, and site-specific areas in line with detailed plans provided by the Fine Art Mixed Media tutors and students. We effectively transformed the raw industrial space of Ambika P3 into a fully functioning contemporary art gallery within an eight-day build period.
Once the exhibition structure was in place, students were responsible for gum taping and painting all surfaces, ensuring that each display area was prepared to a professional standard. The technical team then undertook the complex task of installing the artworks. These works ranged from traditional formats such as paintings and drawings to large-scale sculptures, installations, and site-specific works that often required custom-built supports or structural fixes. Some works were suspended from ceilings or affixed to walls, while others required the careful integration of sound, video, and interactive digital technologies.
At the close of the exhibition, the technical team was also responsible for the de-install and pack-down, carefully dismantling walls, de-rigging installations, and returning the space to its original state within a tight timeframe.

Our role extended to the specialist installation of multimedia setups, including projectors, screens, audio systems, and bespoke lighting designs tailored to each artwork. This demanded close collaboration with students to ensure their work was presented safely, securely, and in a way that realised their artistic vision.
The build has always been a tight process that required advanced problem-solving, precise technical skills, and strong collaboration between technicians, academic staff, and students. The result: a professionally produced degree show that provided graduates with an invaluable opportunity to present their practice to the public, peers, and the wider art community in one of London’s most distinctive contemporary art venue, something I am extremely proud to have been a part of.
